BC New Democrats Only 3932 Votes* Away From Victory

May 19, 2009

Now that I’ve highlighted the negative parts of BC Election 2009, let’s have a look at a positive aspect.

The BC election was close – really close. Based on the preliminary numbers, the BC New Democrats lost by only 3,932 votes.

But one might point out that the BC Liberals beat out the BC NDP by 62,983 votes. That’s true, if one is only looking at the provincial-side numbers.

However, to win government, a party needs a minimum of 43 seats. The BC NDP got 36 seats. Therefore, the BC NDP only needed to win 7 more seats. The table below contains the seven closest seats that the BC NDP lost and the number of votes needed to win:

Seat Lib Votes NDP Votes Lib – NDP + 1
Maple Ridge-Mission 8393 8195 199
Saanich North and the Islands 12513 12118 395
Oak Bay-Gordon Head 11266 10736 531
Kamloops-North Thompson 9351 8798 554
Burnaby North 9351 8727 625
Burnaby-Lougheed 8544 7732 813
Boundary-Similkameen 6439 5626 814
3932

While I’m not sure if the circumstance that produced these numbers will be around in 2013, it is interesting none the less to see just how attainable a New Democrat government in BC is.

keep that for future reference. That was excellent.

However, would we have been happy with that result? I did support the NDP, but as lots of us believe in electoral reform and proportionality, we would seem to be saying the ends justify the means

Sorry about this getting up so late. I should check the spam filter more…

It’s not the best situation, but I’d take it.

I think such a result would probably give a shot in the arm for electoral reform.
