Quick Thoughts On Possible Coalition Whilst I Eat Crow

December 1, 2008

Huh. So I was wrong; Harper was stupid enough to go full blast with the political party subsidy cut until it was too late and the opposition parties have seem to overcome the mathematical unlikeliness of a coalition.

It also seems that the proposed coalition has Liberal and NDP cabinet seats, but no Bloc Quebecois.

Interestingly enough, the NDP only gets 25% of the cabinet seats while it has 32.4% of the seats in the coalition, [6/24 instead of 8/24] and the NDP won’t get the finance position (or possibly deputy Prime Minister), so I hope the NDP will be receiving other benefits for these concessions.

As well, the common assumption is that Libby Davies shall be the NDP’s BC voice in Cabinet. Seniority wise, it makes sense. Geographically, however, it would make more sense if the NDP chose somebody from outside Lower Mainland – South Vancouver Island, because a) the Liberals don’t have an MP in that position; and b) the NDP does. That would make Nathan Cullen and Alex Atamanenko cabinet contenders then.

I don’t know, I find it more likely that Cullen or Atamanenko will find positions as Parliamentary Secretaries before they get a full blown cabinet position.

My ideal, albeit within this limit framework, would be for Davies to remain as NDP House leader and Cullen to get into Cabinet in the Natural Resources Ministry. That with Duncan in Environment, and the NDP in charge of Transportation and Industry could lead to a real synergy between the four to move on creating the so-called ‘Green Collar’ industry.
