Free Liberal Membership!

November 20, 2008

Does anybody else see any potential problems with this:

As leader, Mr. Rae said he’d “grow” the party by engaging Canadians in all parts of the country, including Liberal-free zones in the West and rural areas. And he said he’d start by making membership in the party free.

Yeah, because you know, the only thing preventing the Liberals from having a large active membership is the $11.50 membership fee.

This sounds like a way to get paper members to me, not members that would donate and volunteer for the Liberals.

Obviously the “paper membership” issue could be a problem. But I’d think a reasonable argument can be made that a party is better off eliminating membership fees if the value of the additional contact information and general involvement from potential members who would see the cost as a nuisance outweighs the benefit of money brought in through membership fees.

And Iggy’s big plan to get more members seems to be calling it “registering” with the Liberal Party instead of joining.

It’s funny that Liberals need little gimmicks like this to get people to join.

Well, Erin, to be fair to Iggy, filling out that register page does require one to pay the $11.50 membership fee.

But yeah, the plan does seem rather gimmicky.

    The Jurist,

Thinking about it a little more, the increase in contact information could be useful, but I think that the discord caused by problems to riding executive elections, nomination selections, and any possible OMOV leadership selection would outweigh the benefits.

Unless the Liberals were to introduce a two-tiered membership structure of course.
