NDO Update: By-Election Problem

October 22, 2008

I thought today would be a good time to update people on the status of New Democrats Online.

A glitch that prevented administrators from administrating has been fixed, and we have now caught up on the backlog of new members.

However, we have a problem in regards to the administrator by-elections.

According to the amended NDO Constitution, there are now supposed to be 5 administrators, but the last election, following old rules, only elected 3.

Therefore we need a by-election to elect the other 2 administrators as soon as possible, if not yesterday.

Here is the problem: the preferential voting software that we used for the last election doesn’t work with the current version of the website; the only type of voting available is single option, traditional voting.

Now, Section 14 of the NDO Constitution is very specific in that preferential voting is required.

Therefore, I’m wondering if anybody has any suggestions in regards to how to solve this problem? Is there different software we can use? Can somebody write a preferential vote module for Drupal 6?

The solution is probably to have the vote run through some sort of hosted service. A very quick Google search revealed the following, although a more exhaustive search might reveal better options:

That’s the only service on the internet I can find that will do what we need; provided of course, less than 101 people are voting in an election.

    It’ll probably do for now.
