A Rose By Any Other Name

March 10, 2008

It seems that BC Liberal Premier Gordon Campbell wants a debate in regards to renaming the “Strait of Georgia” to the “Salish Sea”. Changing the name would remove a tribute to King George III and transfer it to the indigenous population.

While the BC Liberal government is busy renaming things, I suggest that they rename the province of British Columbia. After all, I can’t think of a name that is more useless in actually describing the province. We ain’t British, and the Columbia River mostly flows through the United States.

However, I don’t see the BC Liberals taking on the cause of renaming of the province. After all, they can undermine the name of more left-leaning newspapers simply by renaming the Strait of Georgia.
