On Election Timing

February 29, 2008

On many blogs, I’ve noticed this contention: one shouldn’t spark an election from the budget/Afghanistan/whatever because it is not a perfect situation for one’s party to exploit.

Well, there is one thing I have noticed about elections: the political situation will change, and the end of the election would probably not sound like the beginning of the election at all. The 2006 election was a good example: it began with the opposition parties voting agianst the government. It certainly didn’t end with a nationwide discussion on which party was at fault for the election.

The point is this: there is probably never going to be a perfect golden opportunity to spark an election, and if there was, things will probably change so much that the perfect golden opportunity won’t even matter much at the end of the campaign anyway.
