On The Municipal Campaign Scene: Sounds Like A Good Idea To Me

October 17, 2007

Interesting news from the Vancouver Civic scene. The opposition Vision Vancouver elector organization is suggesting that corporations and unions should be banned from making donations to municipal election campaigns. As election rules are controlled by provincial legislation, any changes would have to be approved by the Provincial Government

I say that this is a good idea, especially at the municipal level. And I think that the rules should be further changed so that limits are placed both on campaign donations and total campaign spending (see Candidate’s Guide, Municipal Elections 2005, by the Ministry of Community Services).

Of course, I’m not going to hold my breath to see if the provincial government will make such a change to municipal campaign rules: after all, the ruling BC Liberals are unwilling to ban corporate and union donations in elections on a provincial level.
