Liberals Deny Its Members Democracy

November 30, 2006

So much for renewal…

It looks like Liberals have rejected their weighted by riding One-Member-One-Vote (OMOV) proposal 318-299 (hopefully there will be more official confirmation soon).

That means that the Liberal Party remains the only one of the top 5 political parties in Canada to use the outdated delegate system as opposed to OMOV.

That means that the Liberals are going to stick with their complex system of electing delegates in which a person has a ballot to elect a leader and another ballot to elect a delegate. In the Liberal delegate system, the delegates have to vote for the leadership candidate that there were elected on only for the first ballot.

It is a complex system, with many, many ways to subvert it, as we have seen over the past couple of months.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t trust a delegate to elect the leader of a political party. That decision is important and it should be mine to make. But if I were a Liberal, I could not do so.

One of the reasons why the Liberals have lost the last election, one of the reasons why the Conservatives can raise more money than them by a large margin is because the Liberals do not give any any power to their grassroots.

It’s a lesson that the Liberals have not learned.

Update: Two other blogs confirm it. I’m disgusted at this turn of events.

Update: The media has confirmed it.

This is an absolutely absurd take on the vote result.

How so? Tell me how democratic is it for an organization to limit a very small percentage (with only a few 1000 people) who can happen to pay for the $995 ($550 for youth) fee, plus travel expenses? I’d say not many.

With 4 of out 5 of Canada’s largest parties using some kind of OMOV, I don’t see any excuse at all for the Liberals.

I know that Liberal Bloggers try to play down the effect of OMOV on the Liberal membership, but for me personally, it is one of the biggest reason why I avoided joining the Liberal Party.
